How International Removals Work

1

Pre-Move Survey

A specialist will survey your belongings (in-person or video) to estimate volume and create a detailed inventory for customs purposes.

2

Packing & Loading

Professional packers use export-grade materials. Items are loaded into shipping containers or removal vehicles with full inventory documentation.

3

Transit & Tracking

Your goods are shipped by road, sea, or air. Most companies offer online tracking so you can monitor your shipment's progress throughout transit.

4

Customs & Delivery

Your removal company handles customs clearance in the destination country. On arrival, goods are delivered and unpacked at your new address.

International Removals FAQs

In most countries, personal household goods that you've owned for at least 6–12 months are exempt from import duty when you're relocating. However, rules vary by country. New items, gifts, alcohol, tobacco, vehicles, and valuables may be subject to duty. Your removal company will advise on what documentation is needed — typically a detailed inventory, proof of ownership, and evidence of your residency change.
Groupage (or LCL — Less than Container Load) shipping means your belongings share a shipping container with other customers' goods heading to the same destination. It's significantly cheaper than a full container (FCL) but typically takes longer, as the container waits until it's full before departing. For moves under 15–20 cubic metres, groupage is usually the most cost-effective option.
For international moves, we recommend booking at least 6–8 weeks in advance, and ideally 12+ weeks for long-haul destinations like Australia, New Zealand, or Canada. This gives time for the pre-move survey, packing, and customs preparation. Popular summer months can mean even earlier booking is necessary.
Most international removal companies offer marine cargo insurance for sea freight and transit insurance for road freight, but the level of cover and terms vary significantly. Always confirm exactly what is covered, the claims process, and the excess before booking. Some companies include basic cover in their quote; comprehensive all-risk cover is usually available as an upgrade.
